Theodor Victor Carl Valenkamph (Swedish, 1868-1924)
X-Press St. Petersburg Co. Stockholm, 1901
Oil on canvas
Gift of Arthur I. Appleton, G12289
As a sailor in the Swedish Navy for eight years, Valenkamph had the opportunity to meticulously study ports, ships and ocean landscapes. This painting was created two years after the artist had immigrated to the United States, but his Scandinavian heritage clearly remained in his thoughts. Valenkamph notably exhibited his work at the Boston Art Club, and he was praised for his accurate portrayals.
