What a beautiful kimono! A kimono is a traditional type of Japanese clothing that men, women and children wear. Long ago, people in Japan wore kimonos every day. Now, kimonos are worn only for special occasions, like a wedding. A treasure cart or floral cart is a popular design on wedding kimonos. If you could design a kimono, what color and pattern would you choose?


As you can see, the kimono robe has the shape of a big “T”; it is also very long and has long sleeves. The kimono is wrapped around the body and secured by a sash called an obi which is tied at the back. The kimono and obi are traditionally made of hemp, linen or silk. The most popular material is silk but it’s also the most expensive. The fabric is often made and decorated by hand.


Fun Facts: Traditionally a kimono is made of four panels of fabric hand sewn together. Historically the kimono would be taken apart to wash the separate panels and then re-sewn back together.
