Do you like to drink hot chocolate? The vessel we are looking at was specifically used to drink chocolate. The Maya would flavor it with chili and other spices, which would give the drink a bitter taste. Later, when sweeteners such as honey or cane sugar were added, drinking chocolate was adopted by the Spanish who brought it to Europe. Its popularity spread throughout the world.
This vessel, like all Mayan pottery was made of clay and molded by hand.
Fun Facts: The Maya were excellent beekeepers and raised stingless bees for honey.
