Vasarely is commonly regarded as the grandfather of the Op Art movement. After abandoning medical studies, he worked as a graphic designer for advertising agencies and used the time to experiment with many art movements. These included Surrealism and Cubism before Vasarely found his own style in Geometric Abstraction. “Lapidaire A” is a work from his Lapidaire portfolio of the 1960s-70s. Vasarely’s style is primarily characterized by checkerboard and grid-like patterns that create the illusion of depth.
