Experience in Spatial Perception, 1966

Acrylic on canvas

Gift of Keller Fox, 2017.2

Like other artists, Laine’s style progressed over time from the figurative into the realm of Abstraction before she discovered a particular passion for Op Art. Many of her works were first conceptualized in black-and-white drawings, a monochromatic choice similar to many examples of early Geometric Abstraction. “Experience in Spatial Perception” exemplifies Laine’s precise control of color tones. In her experimentations with these subtle color gradations and paint layering, Laine was praised by critics for creating the illusion of after-images on canvas.
